forgive me

I failed to inform you: there is a new song up called "From Fallen Fragments." I've been working on it for quite some time, but hadn't posted it for awhile. The lyrics are drawn from a poem I previously wrote and posted on here. Check it out.

time flies

Winter break is almost but a set of memories. I've enjoyed the opportunity for relaxation and time spent in the company family and friends.

As I reflect on the past few weeks, I am brought to consideration of the near future. Here comes the final semester of my undergraduate career. I'm not sure I believe it, but I suppose I'm ready to embrace it.

goals

Most of the time, my mind seems to run at a million miles and hour. I'm an extremely futuristic thinker, so it's rare for my thoughts not to be racing through potential happenings and dreams. At times, it gets a bit overwhelming having my mind churn out so many visions. There is so much I want to do with my life that I realize I cannot possibly do it all.

So then I freeze and focus my time on less involved things. It's not the proper response, I know, but it's often what I do. In essence, I allow my energy and abilities to go down the drain. Somehow, I need to strike a better balance that embraces the constant flow of ideas and focuses upon a handful to live out.

So with the turn of the new year, there will be no hokey, formulaic resolutions for me. Just real goals and challenges based around my visions of the future. These aren't senseless things or trivial habits that will fade through the cracks. They're the kind of goals that will fill me with simultaneous fear and excitement, the kind that build character, the kind that really transform life.

resonance

When I consider 2009, I recognize that there were some solid albums released that I have thoroughly enjoyed. I will not be so bold as to post a list of the best albums of 2009, as I do not feel qualified to do so. I will present, however, a list of some of my own favorite albums released over the course of the last year. If you have not checked these albums out, it is highly recommended that you do so.

Armistice | Mute Math
This may be my very favorite album of the year. Evidently, the initial set of songs for this album was thrown out the window, and the whole process of creating this album almost led to the demise of the band. I have no idea what that first set sounded like, but I do know that the struggle paid off and those songs that made it to the album continue to blow me away. Mute Math produced an extremely solid sophomore record, and on top of that, this band certainly knows how to put on a live show.

The Resistance | Muse
It took me a moment to warm up to this album, but boy, have I warmed up to it. I mean, really, how can you beat the sweet sounds of Matthew Bellamy's voice? This album has such a rich variety in sound, yet maintains that signature Muse identity throughout. In all of my listens, "Undisclosed Desires" has probably gotten the most play time with its addicting beat. Still, the 3-track symphony that closes the album... that's tough to top, if you ask me.

Absence | Paper Route
This band was a random find for me amidst browsing online, and I'm quite glad I found them. In my mind, their sound is a bit reminiscent of Mute Math's, tending a bit more electronica with a taste of 80's pop. They layer a lot of sounds, but to me, one of the most captivating parts of the album is the raw lyrics. And, they recorded this album themselves? Props.

Horehound | Dead Weather
I'll be honest, I much prefer Jack White on guitar to drums, but that hasn't kept me from enjoying this album by his latest band. Best track, hands down, would have to be "Will There Be Enough Water?"

the movement

In the movement
There is constant flurry
To pause is unthinkable
They say - be still and be waste

In the movement
Rush to get ahead of it all
Work for the future
Declare the present to be dead

Eyes will not focus
Thoughts will not rest
Allow nothing to pass
Without continual stirring

But pause and dare to defy
Destroy the spell of the movement
For if true life is to emerge
The movement cannot last

Eyes will now focus
Thoughts will now rest
Allow nothing to pass
Without enduring calm

Yes, enduring calm
For the movement cannot last

reject apathy

"Even a student earning $105 a week is wealthier than 85 percent of the world."

As I was reading an article on rejectapathy.org, I came across this stat. It made me uncomfortable.

This isn't just about Americans being wealthy. I know that. We all do. It's about me. I'm a college student who has the means to make 100 bucks a week. And, based on that alone, I am richer than 85 percent of the world.

There's some cliche saying that with wealth comes a lot of responsibility, and it's true. With this knowledge, I realize I have to do something. I cannot sit with any sense of entitlement and spend all my money on me. Nor can I just turn a blind eye and pretend I don't know any better as I make frivolous purchases.

I have to be more intentional about every investment of money... and of time and energy because, I'm richer than at least 85 percent of the world. I have the power to make a difference... a responsibility to act. In my mind, at least 85 percent of the world is counting on me to make a difference and to, well, reject apathy.
